Dronning Eufemia Street will be the parade street that brings OperaKvarteret and Bjørvika together. The Norwegian Public Roads Administration has estimated a completion date of 2013 for the street measuring 700 meters long and 43 meters wide.
The Norwegian Public Roads Administration is responsible for building Dronning Eufemia Street, Nylands Street and the eastern tangent (Ring 1), which are all classified as part of the national street network system. Dronning Eufemia Street will stand out as a boulevard with tramways, two lanes for collective traffic, two regular traffic lanes in each direction, two green avenues as well as splendid conditions for bikers and pedestrians.
The traffic bound for eastern Oslo and Ring 1 is planned to be directed towards Nylandsgata and the eastern tangent. At present, Nyland road runs through the junction called “Bispelokket” and heads north towards Schweigaardsgate. When the new network develops, Nylandsgata will be brought down from the junction to connect with the existing street level. It will consist of one lane for collective traffic and one for regular traffic in each direction.
King Haakon V street (eastern tangent) becomes the new main connection from Mosseveien/the tunnel of Ekeberg to Ring 1 and the centre of Oslo. It will enter the district east of the small strait of Bispekilen and OperaKvarteret. The new tunnel, Grønlia, emerging from the tunnel of Ekeberg is also a new feature in this network. It will substantially reduce the inward traffic into the city from this direction.
According to the head of the Bjørvika project in the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, Mr. Kjell Solem, the big traffic intersection in the area will be removed during spring 2011.
“There is some ground work to be completed following the opening of the submerged tunnel, before we can start to dismantle the large junction”, he continues.
Dronning Eufemia Street will open in full length and width in 2013. The Norwegian Public Roads Administration will stand for the construction of more than 8 km new roads, including the tunnel of Grønlia, bridges and crossroads. They will also build collective lanes and more than 4 km of lanes reserved for bikers and pedestrians.
